What do wine grapes, fruit wines, craft brews, elk herds and golf have in common?
They’re all available, often with views of Lake Huron, along the Sunrise Side Wine & Hops Trail. “Sunrise Side” is the nickname for the northeast Michigan coast from Standish to Mackinaw City, and the Trail is an association of tourist-friendly businesses, including two wineries, a microbrewery and an elk preserve, that banded together to showcase the beauty and diversity of this neck of the Michigan woods.
It’s the brainstorm of Jack Matthias, owner of Thunder Bay Golf Club and Resort in Hillman, just west of Alpena, and could be the solution for Michiganians looking for gas-friendly destinations. From Detroit, the region is about 200 miles away.
